OpenDNS retains cached DNS records during NS failures, no problems on Internet for me. Here's their servers. 208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220

        So Google's public DNS doesn't cache? 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 ?

.@chichester @SwiftOnSecurity I had no luck with Google's public DNS in the outages today. 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 were returning lookup failures.

.@chichester @SwiftOnSecurity having worked at Google, I've read the design docs for Public DNS, codename "honest DNS", & it plays by rules.

.@chichester @SwiftOnSecurity I think what OpenDNS is doing is intentionally caching when servers go down, when it technically shouldn't? 🤔

.@chichester @SwiftOnSecurity I'm not a DNS expert, but the big feature of Google's DNS is it doesn't play games to monetize failed lookups.

.@chichester @SwiftOnSecurity I'm sure there are Google SWEs and SREs working on postmortem plans for fixing Google DNS for these scenarios.
