Modern OS intelligently cache disk data in RAM. Even on a screaming-fast SSD, having tons of RAM still helps speed.https://twitter.com/srigi/status/917998817051541504 …

RAM usage percentage is almost completely nonsense in how much it simplifies how memory really works. But it has its uses in troubleshooting

Especially considering how long programmers have had to be adaptive in tiered memory approaches, static RAM allotments are anachronistic.

Unfortunately, systems under highly dynamic pressures tend to get extremely complicated as they optimize further and further.

The ideal model computer has a flat memory architecture. That’s where we started, we moved away, many are hoping we will be moving back.

Ideally differentiation between main memory and storage eventually disappears. But requires high-speed non-volatile storage, very elusive.

As @ErrataRob points out, a truly flat memory architecture isn’t truly possible at high speed, I was referring to theme of collapse of tiers

It's coming. PCM, ReRAM, MRAM. It's not exactly as fast as DRAM, but it's persistent and fast/dense enough to be worth freaking out about.

Did you know virtually all your RAM is always filled? Things get marked less important to keep, instead of directly removed. Want to see what your computer is keeping in RAM, which is magnitudes faster than SSD? I built a retro gaming computer [some emus don't play nice with direct hardware access] running 2GB RAM. Win98se/FrankenOS gets 768mb. The rest is a RAMdisk managed with an external pgm. Can load a whole pre-2004 game CD into RAM :D Weee!pic.twitter.com/i4tdGDnRgd

Caching in RAM is nice but I wish Windows' SuperFetch wasn't so aggressive in filling it as fast as possible. When coming out of hibernation on a laptop with a HDD for example it's a pain.
