Electron is a cancer murdering both macOS and Windows as it proliferates. Microsoft must offer a drop-in version with native optimizations to improve performance and resource utilization. This is the end of desktop applications. There’s nowhere but JavaScript.

All of Office 365 is (almost finished) being completely rewritten in this little scripting language called Disclaimer: I have no inside info. I’ve been wondering when they were going to make this move for about a year and a half, this was one of their options.
This is why Microsoft wanted Chrome to implement token binding. They proof’d it in Edge and need it to be in Chromium when they switch over...
Edge is a great browser. Edge is not the problem. Edge would continue to function perfectly well. It’s the architectural reliance of the world, including Microsoft, on Electron.

Microsoft cannot easily port EdgeHTML to Windows 7. Microsoft cannot port EdgeHTML to other platforms. Microsoft Teams needs to keep running on Windows 7. Microsoft doesn’t want to invest in EdgeHTML for Teams if they still have to maintain a Chromium version anyway.
