I was reminded of the old gamedev saw about how nobody's 3D math is actually correct, they just have the right number of multiplications by -1 in the stack to cancel out.
Today, for work, I realized I need to reverse sorting in a strange place, to achieve the right "polarity"

This is so alarmingly common. Or my personal favorite, being invited to review a system that went from static objects to mobile objects and realizing all of the transform math is horribly wrong. But years of features are built on the incorrectness.

Oh my god, this is my life... everyone piles on “copying the last person” and nobody fixes the core problem.

Perhaps, but I also get the really ugly problems. My personal favorite was I had a friend who’s solution to math issues was to just shuffle the matrix order till things worked. Column major, row? Meh it’ll eventually work!
