The Trump administration is banning immigrants from Nigeria, Eritrea, Myanmar and Kyrgyzstan. Sudan and Tanzania will be barred from the diversity visa lottery. It's an expansion of the "travel ban," but visitors from all six countries are still permitted

New public charge details on how will navigate the court injunction preventing the rule from being applied in Illinois: if you live in Illinois when you file the green card app, or move to Illinois while your app is still pending, you’re shielded from the restrictions

I’ve been working on this—my first feature—for months. It’s the story of one family, split in half for no reason by Border Patrol. It’s also a story of how completely US border policy has changed in past yr. Lemme (ahem) explain. 1/

Trump will hold a human trafficking summit today. The denial rate for trafficking victim visas has soared during his administration, a point that reporters (including me) raised during a call this morning with a senior administration official

To be clear, the last *nationwide* injunction was lifted. The rule remains enjoined under a statewide block in Illinois, but the federal government is trying to lift that one as well.

Inbox: won’t start enforcing its contested wealth test on immigrants, aka “public charge” rule, until Feb. 24, after SCOTUS lifted the last injunction holding it up this week. Also, any public benefits received while the injunctions were in effect won’t be considered.

Remember that time CBP said there was no directive targeting Iranian and Shi'a travelers? Yeah, I certainly hope you didn't believe them. Will post copy of directive in thread, along with some thoughts.

Adding to the confusion, the admin can't enforce the policy in Illinois rn under a statewide injunction. But who will that injunction apply to? Many apps pass through the state, since the national lockbox for certain green card petitions is in Chicago:

SCOTUS green lit the public charge rule (for now), but immigration lawyers are left wondering how to prepare green card apps now w/o guidance. has yet to publish the self-sufficiency form or release any timeline info. "No one is giving us answers."

This means can now deny green cards to immigrants who may use public benefits in the future in every state... except Illinois, where a state-wide injunction halting the rule remains. This creates a very weird immigration situation. More here:
