    Years it took us to drive up CO2 by 10 ppm: 320 → 330: 12 330 → 340: 8 340 → 350: 6 350 → 360: 7 360 → 370: 6 370 → 380: 5 380 → 390: 5 390 → 400: 5 400 → 410: 4 That’s making the climate crisis worse faster.

There's a sense of relief in Europe as natural gas prices climbed down from their highest point, thanks to mild weather and LNG coming in. But 105 €/MWh is 6 times the price a year ago, and futures prices are now around 90 €/MWh for all of 2022. This will hurt.

Number of Corona infections growing rapidly again: +36% in a week, globally. Most of the growth in US, UK, France, Spain, and Italy.

I didn't realize this. Since 2015, France's nuclear power production went down by 3 times as much as Germany's. [France could get back on track if its major maintenance operation is successful, I'd say]

The forecast is now for 5 days in a row (28 Dec - 2 Jan) with 24-hour average temperatures which would be above normal for April (9.9°C) here.

Middle of the winter in the Netherlands: four consecutive days with 13⁰C (55F). Ok, it saves a lot of natural gas.

These days, Dutch public TV news shows quite some people circumventing recent corona measures. Going to Austria just before travel restrictions kick in, shopping in Antwerp, etc. They generally think they're quite smart and/or deserve the break.

Crossed it hundreds of times, still never rode it. About time ;) (Unused railway bypass through the east of Utrecht, converted to bicycle highway)

Including gas-fired auxiliary boilers (for peak demand), their share in the heat delivered by large networks was 62% in 2019: That needs to change to renewable sources of course, and that's going to take quite some effort in the coming years.

Dutch public TV news is slightly optimistic about the sources of heat for district heating in the country. "Tilburg gets it from a biomass-fired power plant, but it can also come from greenhouses or data centers." Most of it still from coal and gas-fired cogeneration though.

Unprecedented, there's that word again. This time from NE Brazil, where up to 500 mm of rain fell in 4 days:

Exact that. There's almost complete silence in engaging consumers with consumption reduction despite the unheard of prices. No idea why that is. Trying to keep bad news away?
