    I think there’s a very tough decision for the networks about taking Trump live on election night, particularly if you know he is going to come out and lie and sow dangerous disinformation about the election.

    Attention journalists: this is no longer a "table top" exercise. Have a plan.

    Every media outlet needs to start planning now to avoid amplifying this. "Trump declares victory" is NOT an acceptable headline or tweet or chyron, nor is "he said," "she said" coverage an appropriate journalistic approach to an attack on legal vote counting in a democracy.

    Some folks don't quite grasp Trump's scheme here. Yes, declaring victory is meaningless *by itself.* But there's more. Repubs hope to contest a portion of mail ballots in, say, PA, then use that to ask courts to halt count of all outstanding mail ballots.

    Hey guys, please ignore this type of garbage. The truth is that elections are never decided on election night. In Utah (and most states) it takes 2 weeks to finalize counting and certify results. It really doesn’t matter who is ahead on election night, it only matters when...1/

    a point Jason Miller made this morning: "President Trump will be ahead on election night, probably getting 280 electoral somewhere in that range, and then they're going to try to steal it back after the election." 1/2

    Trump "declaring" victory has no more legal consequence than if I declared myself the Queen of Spain. But Trump is well aware of the effect his rhetoric has on his supporters—in particular those with a propensity to engage in violence— and this should be understood as a threat.

    press terminology note: Trump can't "declare victory" or "claim victory" any more than he can declare himself emperor. He can only predict victory. It's not his decision, so don't amplify his error.
