My 4 1/2 year old granddaughter came home from preK, told my daughter they had "bad man practice". When ask what that was, she said "in case a bad man comes to our school we have to help Mrs.M push her desk in front of the door, get in the closet, hold hands & be VERY quiet!

This just broke my heart.

Mine too when my daughter told me...then I ask my sweet girl how she felt about practice...she said "grandma don't worry, only practicing so if a bad man tricks Mr.A and Mr.B ( the 2security ppl on campus at all times). Happening all over the country to these babies.
-
I cant even wrap my brain around the fact that my 3 year old grand daughter will be doing this soon.

Well....ive always been up for a good fight!!
-
Me too...we need to round up grandma's fighting together...

What's *almost* worse is real concern over the fact that my daughter's VPK isn't doing drills like this. :/ Why should I even feel like they should??

A new American rite of passage. The first active shooter drill for our little kids. We don’t have to stand for this. There is a giant question in the air . What kind of country do we want to live in?

I've been through code red drills with elementary students. I wrote a bit about it:https://medium.com/@ahlswede/dear-parents-58498acb4d95 …

My American ex-wife were here in Norway and asked the principal at an elementary school what they had done to prepare for shooting incidents. The principal actually - no kidding - reported a mental health concern to the child protective services. That's how unusual this is.
-
That story made me smile, and not just because you’ve confirmed that normalcy still exists elsewhere in the world. I’m also trying to imagine your ex’s face when CPS was called.

We got an email from the school superintendent today about this too. I hate that this is the world we live in. My son is only 10.

I wish the teachers would strike or do a walk out, nationally. And students.... maybe then they would act? Idk though.
-
That's actually a great idea. Students refuse to go to school until the guvmint does something more serious than offering up post-facto "thoughts and prayers", while pocketing another
@nra donation to their PAC. -
The idea is good, but in actuality many kids get free or reduced meals at school, and sometimes it’s their only meal of the day. I’ve heard many teachers say this, deciding not to strike out of concern for their students. Sad but true.

My seven year old tells me all 24 kids squeeze into the classroom closet and wait, in the dark, playing the "quiet as a mouse" game until a teacher tells them the drill is over. And I try not to cry.
-
Me too, me too. Hearing both of my girls, 5 and 7, describe the drills is gut wrenching. Not what childhood should be.
