The Rosa Parks statue: 1st full-length statue of an African American person in the @uscapitol & was authorized by Congress in 2005 #WHM2017
It honors her famous refusal in 1955 to obey the driver's direction to move from her seat on the bus to make room for a white passenger.
She was arrested & found guilty of disorderly conduct and violating a local ordinance for her act of defiance. #WomensHistoryMonth
Later, she served as secretary & receptionist to Rep. John Conyers until her retirement in 1988.
She co-founded the Rosa L. Parks Scholarship Foundation in 1980 & the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self-Development in 1987.
