Barton was a pioneer in many ways. She was a school teacher when most teachers were men & is among the 1st women to work in the fed gov.

She was working as a recording clerk in the @usptoe in Washington, DC, when the first units of federal troops poured into DC in 1861.

Barton felt a calling to help her “soldier boys”- many of the men she had grown up with or taught - during the Civil War.
