On Sun 28 April, a 14-year-old girl from Surrey was reported missing by her mum. We started a missing person enquiry, and she was found the following morning (29 April) at Hounslow train station.

Our specialist officers worked with the girl and her family, gaining her trust, and she disclosed that she had arranged to meet a man on WhatsApp. The man had taken her to an unknown hotel and had sex with her.

We started an intensive investigation to find the man, who she only knew as "Diddie", as quickly as possible.

The first clue came from her mobile phone. She'd taken a "selfie" early on the Monday morning, and an officer was able to identify the hotel based on the background of the selfie.

The suspect had paid cash, and given a fake name, so we trawled through the CCTV footage from around the hotel until we found footage of the car he'd used.

On Tues 30 April we added the car to our "wanted" list and it was found later that day by the
@metpoliceuk - but frustratingly the driver was not "Diddie".Show this thread -
We continued to search the CCTV around the hotel. Trawling through CCTV (especially when there are lots of cameras) can be a time consuming job - and some officers worked a 28 hour shift on this case.

We also continued to search for variations of his nickname, and on 2 May we got information that linked 34 year old Diiriye Ali-Jamac with the nickname “Diddie”.
Now we had to find him!Show this thread -
We visited his previous known addresses, and added a "wanted" marker to the police national computer. Within 3 hours the marker had a hit...

"Diddie" had bought a one way ticket and boarded a plane to Ethiopia. We quickly informed
@MPSHeathrow who kindly went and got him off the plane (less than 30 minutes before the plane was due to take off).

When we looked at his phone, he'd been sent a message by the driver of the car, tipping him off that the car had been stopped, and seized, in relation to an allegation of sexual assault.

On Monday 19 August Ali-Jamac was jailed for six years after earlier pleading guilty to three counts of sexual activity with a child. He was also given an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
