Thanks @Surgeon_General—Appreciate EMS every day; lay responders are essential. #naloxone is best as ODing person losing resp. rate & unresponsive, but b4 turning blue: w/fentanyl era, that’s happening by dispatch; arrival is too late. #timeisbrain #timeiskidney #timeiseverything

Having seen & tx’ed many overdoses as we also make the 911 call, fire & police often beat EMS to the scene—& our primary care clinic is <100 yards to a Level 1 trauma center ambulance bay! We shouldn’t ask fire & police to be

Sorry. Opening airway & supporting respirations in a hypoventilating patient is the first step. Naloxone is not the only focus. Education on ventilatory support, CPR, and *appropriate* naloxone use is KEY, not just flooding the world with naloxone.

Critical first step?? Community members?? What about the lack of infrastructures and trained professionals? CSBs/BHAs are yet to be effective at addressing the needs of this population (at least in my community).

Attacking the opioid problem directly at the source would be a better first step. First Responders will tell you that a lot of the time they give Narcan and save the person only to see them OD again and again and again. Hard to help people who don't want help.
