Dr. King opened previously closed doors for blacks. Dr. Satcher held positions no other black man held before. There are less black men becoming docs now than 30 years ago, & jail more likely than med school. So particularly for a black male, this was a uniquely special moment.
Meeting Dr. Satcher truly should be a wonderful moment for anyone regardless of race, but failing to acknowledge the unique obstacles black males have or must over come, or the lack of role models that exist for them, is part of why it’s so hard to change things for the better.
