Thread: I want to clarify 2 important #vaping misconceptions. 1) The @US_FDA proposed action on vaping is NOT a flavor ban. 2) E cigs/ vaping are NOT legally recognized as a smoking cessation aide in the US- because the vaping industry hasn’t applied for approval as such.

Per the deeming authority Congress granted @US_FDA - most all ecigs / nicotine vape products are currently on the market illegally- including kid appealing flavors. The rapid spike in youth use (which now almost no one denies) has forced action. Flavors 1st, then all products.

However per the law and the deeming rule, any company can apply to the FDA for approval of vape products – including flavors. So from a federal standpoint, THERE IS NO “BAN.” If manufacturers/ retailers/ consumers want continued access, submit an application & make the case.

Vaping is a multi billion $ industry (much of that 💵 made selling to kids). If one really believes these products help people quit, it would be best for all if that 💰 funded US studies & applications for approval as Congress dictates, vs lobbying for continued illegal access.

As USSG I want to find the right balance - between the data and science on all sides, and the law. 1st we must strive to follow the law as Congress dictates. 2nd we can’t ignore proven epidemic youth use. 3rd, must make the science (in US environment) & legal cessation case.

So to vaping industry/ retailers/ advocates/ researchers- collect the data, do/ fund the studies, & make the proper legal case as the law requires. But asking @US_FDA to not enforce/ allow continued illegal (per @FDACommissioner) access when youth are harmed isn’t reasonable.

Do youth not use Tobacco and Alcohol even when it is illegal? If 12 lives of people Danking counterfeit THC Carts constitutes an Epidemic....Then WHY is over 4,300 Teen Deaths not an Epidemic? Since when do we strip the rights of Adults away because of Teens breaking the law?

It’s absolutely ridiculous. Now I’m seeing the @Surgeon_General specify “US Studies” as if medical professionals around the world are not sufficient.

The right balance for a country that isn't invested in tobacco profits, a country that with universal healthcare that will lose money if people are sick. A country that didn't agree to share tobacco profits and never ban cigarettes because of it.pic.twitter.com/FHBapKk6Py

Can you explain why you have a financial interest divested into Tobacco companies? But, yet you have no such financial interest in Vaping companies....interesting? @ABC @CBSNews @NBCNews @FoxNews @nytimes @thehill @WashTimes @dcexaminer @ICIJorg @MichaelMontCIR

These "I want to, we must" don't really mean you are or have done it. Vaping has been around for more than 10 years. Why haven't you guys done an extensive science based studies or researches yet as @RCPLondon @PHE_uk have done already?! #msabloodmoney? #Corrupt?

Calling e-cigs a cessation device is a trap. Once it’s labeled a cessation devise, big pharma will be going to court to take over the market like they tried in 2009. Spoiler alert, vaping claimed recreational use not cessation to keep greedy pharma out of vaping

You need to keep looking for that balance because all I see is bias and agenda.

Instead of balancing "all sides," pursue scientific rigor and discard the others. UK warned of dangers of smoking two years before US Surgeon General Report in 1964. UK now, in terms of science and health related to smoking, is already years ahead of politicized agenda-driven US.
