Putting in some work in the ORs at ⁦@WRBethesda⁩ - got to help with some interesting cases and saw several people get Tylenol and other meds to help provide anesthesia and post-op pain relief with minimal opioids. They all woke up comfy and happy! 😃 ⁦@ASALifeline⁩pic.twitter.com/J5ukgkok37

Posting limited info like this is misleading and irresponsible. This suggest Tylenol is sufficient as the main source for post-op analgesia. It is not. Please try to be more responsible with your messages.

studies show 1000mg of Tylenol is equivalent to 6mg of morphine. Which is more than I’ve given quite a few patients in the OR. And I’ve definitely given patients only Tylenol and toradol (like ibuprofen) and had them wake up with minimal pain. Not for everyone but it does work!

Can you please provide the link to the study showing 1000mg of Tylenol = 6mg Morphine?

Here’s a full report from @NSCsafety that shows an even bigger effect. They reviews multiple studies and found, “that an injection of 10 mg of morphine is roughly equivalent to an oral dose of OTC ibuprofen.” https://www.nsc.org/Portals/0/Documents/RxDrugOverdoseDocuments/Evidence-Efficacy-Pain-Medications.pdf …

And there’s this- where they showed not even prescription strength but over the counter Tylenol plus ibuprofen was superior to opioids.pic.twitter.com/pykZ7gzl5l

@JoshBloomACSH @DanLairdMD @ChadDKollas @LeahHoustonMD @JeffreyFudin @Pharmaciststeve PLEASE read what our @Surgeon_General is tweeting today. As a former ICU RN I find these tweets reckless, they will be taken as fact, misapplied, used to stigmatize CPP’s more.

          2) @Pharmaciststeve @JeffreyFudin could you two dissect the claims our @Surgeon_General made regarding 1000mg Tylenol equals 6mg morphine, 10mg of morphine is equal to an OTC ibuprofen. @JoshBloomACSH I know you’ve dissected the Tylenol plus Motrin one but if you could address it

I get really tired of posts like this that ignore cardiovascular and renal complications of NSAID use or interactions between NSAIDs and medications like ACEis and ARBs that a high percentage of patients with chronic pain are also taking.

I’m not an opiate advocate, but I practice in the real world where we don’t always have a ton of options. Sure, there are reasons to avoid opiates. Good ones, but can we please stop acting like giving everyone ibuprofen is an option?

Where’s the evidence? If they were treating very mild pain, for which opioids are not indicated, it’s possible but certainly not a fair or appropriate comparison. It would be like comparing IV gentamicin to a topical antibiotic for a scratch or splinter.

          3) Tylenol and ibuprofen to a patient rather than bother 4.6 people to get oxycodone is disturbing to say the least! Why should it matter how many people are needed to get a patient relief?! The % of people that Tylenol + ibuprofen works on is small! Don't bother, pun intended!!
