I’ve often said I’m not the SG for one group, but for everyone regardless of race, sex, or sexual preference. On #WorldPride day, lets celebrate the advances we’ve made in LGBTQ health, and commit to doing more to eliminate health disparities/ establishing health equity for ALL.pic.twitter.com/8wdkqxRqnv

I agree Amy. Twitter didn’t allow for the exhaustive list I wanted, so I stuck with a short list that people can see & often discriminate by (eg sex, race, and who we choose to publicly be with). You are right- orientation is different & often preferred term, though less visible.

To be clear for all, preference implies a choice of expression, while orientation suggests something that is inherent. For many people, their expressed “preference” doesn’t match their inherent orientation- but even using orientation this way could misinterpreted/ stigmatizing.

The safest /best thing to do is 1) be willing to talk to people in the first place and then 2)ask what terms & pronouns THEY prefer. While there are definitely some clear “wrongs” there are no always clear/ consistent “rights.” Must also be careful not to discourage engagement.

Amy- I apologize to you if I used a term that was offensive to you, and I hope we can continue to engage to promote LGBTQ health and equity for all! 🏳️‍🌈

Thank you for responding so openly to criticism of your choice of words. Please, never let fear of saying the wrong thing stop you from speaking up and speaking out for LGBTQ+ health equity. Thank you for being open to learning. 🌈

Thanks Kim! I’m grateful for the support, and the conversation. I worry that too many people are so fearful of engaging today, and that so many are so quick to castigate others for trying to engage. But I always try to give the benefit of the doubt, & own my missteps/ improve!

Heartfelt thank you for this response, for being open to changing your language. I’m impressed, and my MD brother was also when he met you last year! We need your leadership.
