Hey @Surgeon_General I am prepping my teaching content for the @IUMedSchool class of 2022 on e-cigs/vaping etc.. I am showing this pic and would love a personal quote from ya. We are the largest medical school in the country! Your old @EskenaziHealth pal @GrahamCarlospic.twitter.com/DKx5Hmc5Zn

I’ve said publicly- new generation ecigs are discreet, come in flavors that youth report are especially appealing, and deliver nicotine more efficiently and effectively than previous generations. As the Nations Doc and a dad, I’m VERY concerned about skyrocketing youth use.

While ecigs might under certain conditions be a means for current adult smokers to quit, right now a substantial proportion of users are actually young people who previously haven’t used nicotine. After years of declining youth tobacco use, we are seeing increases due to ecigs.

Providers need to learn about these products, ask young people and their parents about ecig use and vaping, and counsel on the unique harms of nicotine to the developing brain. See my advisory at http://surgeongeneral.gov  for more info.

Wouldn't it be better to quantify the "substantial proportion" and let the readers judge? % of NEVER smokers who use e-cigs in past 30 days: 6.3% infrequently (1-19 of past 30 days); 0.9% frequently (20-30 of past 30- days - including daily use); 0.48% daily.

Please stop implying that nicotine is bad for the adolescent brain. Millions of us started smoking in our teens, after growing up with parents smoking in the home, and many of our Mothers smoked while pregnant. I’ve never met 1 person or heard of anyone being harmed by nicotine.

Sir, I’m not going to die from smoking because crappy parents can’t control their children from using an age restricted adult product illegally. And I’m not stupid. This is about Big Pharma money, not about saving lives and definitely not about the children.

And yet more teens are drinking than vaping. Could it be those kid friendly flavors of alcohol available these days? Where is your outrage about that? 4,300 underage youth die each year from excessive drinking. Deaths from vaping? Zero! Get your priorities straight.
