1/4 Hope everyone had a fantastic #fatherday! For this week’s #SundaySpotlight on #PublicHealth science, I’m shining a light on this @WSJ piece examining women being prescribed opioids after having a C-section. Read more:https://on.wsj.com/2wGMecy

I'm all for medicating appropriately, BUT I don't like this trend of being so afraid that people will get addicted that we avoid useful medicines--even when they might be the best option.

Here’s the thing- while opioids are useful for some, in far too many (most in fact) cases, they aren’t the best option. In most instances opioids simply sedate the patient and mask vs treat the pain, and have other side effects like nausea, itching, and constipation.

“Mask vs treat the pain” what if you have a condition where there is no treatment other than to “mask the pain” so the person isn’t stuck in bed wanting to die? Or unable to do ADLs? When does the patient & doctor get to decide what is best for the patient?

And being on Tylenol or ibuprofen for 6 weeks, going through breastmilk, doesn’t come with side effects like liver, stomach and kidney issues?? You are supposed to sleep after major surgery and labor. Stop torturing women!

We need more tools in the box, not fewer, and we need less politics dictating medicine to doctors.

Wow, some women still have an option of opioids after C-section? Discussing women's options for pain control in this rx enviroment is pointless. No options. Women denied pain relief all conditions, widespread across the US. HEAR us and restore human rights. #OpioidHysteria

That’s why prescribing doctors have licenses. Let them make the call.

This is completely false. Patients are being denied pain medicine and forced to use poor alternatives like benzos, making them groggy and nauseous. My family member just went through cataract surgery. She was told lies about the pain, and had to demand relief. You own a genocide.

For a scientist, u sure do like to make a lot of claims without any citation or evidence. Like pretty much no scientist I can think of, except for those w an agenda.
