2/4 C-section pain can be severe and impede the ability for a new mom to care for her baby and/or herself- but opioids are often not the best option. @WSJ reports most hospitals sent new moms home with a prescription whether they asked for one or not. #OpioidAwareness

3/4 But some hospitals are changing their processes and instead treating new moms with regularly scheduled & higher doses of over the counter pain meds (like Tylenol and Motrin), and successfully reducing the amount of opioids needed/ given – in the hospital and at home.

Medical Cannabis???

NO!!! Cannabis components can be passed to baby in utero and in breast milk, and there are numerous concerns regarding exposing the developing brain to cannabis - especially with more potent strains and consumption methods that mean even more THC for baby.

I'm all for medicating appropriately, BUT I don't like this trend of being so afraid that people will get addicted that we avoid useful medicines--even when they might be the best option.

Here’s the thing- while opioids are useful for some, in far too many (most in fact) cases, they aren’t the best option. In most instances opioids simply sedate the patient and mask vs treat the pain, and have other side effects like nausea, itching, and constipation.

I agree in a reduction on discharge but inpatient, ketorolac was not TOUCHING my pain a few hours postop. Had 1mg hydromorphone in PACU then felt immense pressure to immediately switch to PO (2 hrs postop) and was in such pain I couldn’t even hold my newborn to feed at times.

This is an insult to women who gave had major abdominal surgery. This is the sanctioned torture of women. This should be her choice not some hitleristic doctors who are opiophobic zealots. >1% chance of addiction. torture is not ok.
