Chronic pain is NOT a character flaw either. It’s a broken or disease filled body that leaves its owner in agony. The stigma these days is if you need opiates as a last resort you are sub human and deserve nothing to help. Meditate on that!
One thing I try to discuss everywhere I travel is stigma. Addiction is a disease - NOT a moral failing. It is critical we treat it as such and talk to one another about it. #AMAmtg

I agree, but let’s take it one step further. Addiction is not just a disease, it’s a systematic problem, and we have system failure. Not enough control on pharma, pain control research, access to non-pharm pain treatment, addiction treatment, and more.

1/ There's also a stigma against chronic pain pt's. MANY pt's that have severe life-long intractable chronic pain have been stabilized on
#opioids at the same dose (NO titrations), for years & that has helped improve the QOL immensely! -
2/ Pt's are being cut off from the one tx that actually helps them. Seniors/elderly & disabled have been especially hit hard by this.

Addiction is highly comorbid with childhood trauma. We need to build trauma informed systems that prioritize compassion and connection and we will have less addiction.
