1/7 Sunday Spotlight: Important read before surgery-> No one goes into an operation hoping to be on opioids a year later. But too often, opioids are excessively prescribed. Up to 75% of patients, if not more, after surgery have leftover painkillers.https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2019/02/12/doctors-limit-prescription-opioids-surgery-pain-reduce-addiction-patients-column/2766756002/ …

My mom had surgery recently and she was asked several times about pain. She had none. 0 out of 10 on the pain scale. Yet, what was one of her meds rx for home? OxyContin. She never filled it.

Better that she was given the RX & didn’t need it than go home from surgery wo the Rx and then have to somehow get to a Dr while in recovery to beg for pain control. Giving surgical patients the choice wins for everyone but failing to do so means some lose & suffer.

Sorry but that’s a false choice (ie give me opioids or ignore my pain). We can treat your pain as well or in many cases BETTER with an opioid sparing regimen. Better pain control AND fewer opioids floating around? Now that’s truly a choice we can all live with, & should support.

Your "opioid sparing regimen" is really an anti-opioid regimen though because patients who need these, in many cases, vital medicines are no longer getting them due to overly restrictive prescribing guidelines that are being treating more like directives.

I believed using acetaminophen and ibuprofen a well as ketorolac I was being responsible and safe. Now I have elevated liver enzymes, chronic kidney disease and stomach ulcers. Almost died from renal failure and bleeding caused by NSAIDS and Tylenol. Think again

Sadly, due to the Opioid Epidemic people who legitimately suffer with pain issues are being demonized denied treatment and left to suffer. Even after surgery or for other pain issues while in the hospital. If you ask for Opioid Medication hospitals accuse patients of drug seeking

Why are you so worried about a few leftover pills after surgery? You’re focusing your time & energy on the wrong drugs. Focus on what is really killing people..ILLEGAL fentanyl, carfentanyl & heroin. Stop making pts w/ legitimate pain the reason other ppl become drug addicts.

88,000+ ppl die per yr due to alcohol-Tens of thousands more than die due to illicit & RXd opioid combined. But I could buy enough ETOH right now to poison myself or just sit around drunk every day. NO ALCOHOL CRISIS But I can't get legally RXd medicines to treat my pain? 🤔
