I’ve often said, stigma is one of our biggest killers and a significant barrier to solving our public health problems. We need to get to a place where we can truly, as a nation, say that addiction is a chronic disease.

My heart goes out to the Troxell family. As a parent myself, I cannot understand the pain you are feeling right now. But I want you to know that we are doing everything we can to help the nation understand that addiction is a not a moral failing. It is a chronic disease.

When will chronic pain not be a social stigma? When will we stop being treated like addicts or even lower than addicts? I feel sorry for the families dealing with addiction but pain patients are not to blame.

In many cases being treated like criminals..questioned at every turn. If we are going to end the stigma associated with addiction shouldn’t the same be done for medication prescribed to those in pain? Being sick and having access to treatment for All is imperative.

Please vote. Our surgeon general is worried about addiction when sexual harassment is a more prevalent problem. Our leadership should address the biggest public health problems.
