I’ve often said, stigma is one of our biggest killers and a significant barrier to solving our public health problems. We need to get to a place where we can truly, as a nation, say that addiction is a chronic disease.

My heart goes out to the Troxell family. As a parent myself, I cannot understand the pain you are feeling right now. But I want you to know that we are doing everything we can to help the nation understand that addiction is a not a moral failing. It is a chronic disease.

Peolpe are committing suicide because they have been stripped from their pain medicine....we never see any apologies to the families that have lost a loved one due to negligent care! Why?????

This stigma has also been attached to chronic pain patients who require opiate medications to function. I was forced off of legally prescribed medication, called an addict and offered no treatment. In fact I was told no treatment unless you're abusing the medication. I was not.

Sad that the opioid epidemic has taken such a toll on families and society. Even a greater tragedy that man-made crises based on lack of control and foresight—such as this—take our focus away from cancer, heart disease, diabetes and so many other debilitating conditions.
