Yesterday I tweeted about remarks I made to a group of doctors regarding opioids and stigma, and I unfortunately and regrettably upset some in the diabetes community. I apologize.

Thanks to all who pointed out how my tweet could have been misinterpreted and actually contributed to stigma. I don’t want anyone with any disease to feel stigmatized- and my remarks illustrate why we must always be cognizant of what we say and how we say it.

Thank you for your sincere apology. I hope you will help us educate your federal government colleagues on the need for #insulin4all in the United States. Your tweet inadvertently highlighted a major governmental failing on behalf of patients with diabetes.

Your motivation for the original tweet was not only propagating false information, it was political. The opioid crisis is a headline grabber. When do our Type 1 children and the price of insulin become a national crisis? When do you educate? When do you ACT? #insulin4all

Save your apology until he stands against the Administration’s (and the Republican congress’) efforts to undermine ACA and its protections for pre-existing conditions. Until then, he’s complicit in making the lives of the people you advocate for worse.

As a registered nurse and now the mom of a Type 1 Diabetic son your comment broke my heart. This was not the result of any poor choices, lack of exercise, or poor parenting. As the top Dic in the US you should be educating, not propagating false information.

While the acknowledgment of your poor words is appreciated you still haven't presented the facts. An apology without understanding isn't an apology. You should express clearly that #T1D is never caused by poor diet, it's an autoimmune disease and choice is NOT a factor.

I’m underwhelmed by this. I wish people could simply say “I was wrong. I knew better and going forward will do better.” His initial tweet was not misinterpreted it was in bad taste.
