Yesterday I tweeted about remarks I made to a group of doctors regarding opioids and stigma, and I unfortunately and regrettably upset some in the diabetes community. I apologize.

Needing and using opioids for pain is not "opioid use disorder" any more than needing and using insulin is "insulin use disorder". The stigma and bias towards pain patients needing opioid medicine is causing hostility, neglect, medical abandonment, and death! It's discriminatory!

Obviously, my asthma caused me to have inhaler use disorder.

Type 1 Diabetes is AN AUTOIMMUNE disease. Lifestyle has nothing to do with its occurrence. Medical professionals SHOULD know the difference.
-
YES. Type 1 has NOTHING TO DO WITH BEHAVIOR OR ENVIRONMENT.

TYPE 1 DIABETES IS NOT EXACERBATED BY BEHAVIOR. You can’t get it by eating fast food. WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR MEDICAL DEGREE????
-

I appreciate the fact that you recognized your mistake. How about instead of primarily focusing on making narcan available for addicts, you use some of that focus on making insulin cheaper for us diabetics.

Or chronic pain - but those w/CP don’t seem to matter these days, as we are all deemed to have OUD & are being stripped of our stable medicines.

My
#T1D#lifewelllived#25year medal. I have fought to stay alive, pay for my healthcare & prescriptions, & fight stigma of diabetes everyday. Comparing any autoimmune disease to a lifestyle disease is unfair and delegitimizes the incredible struggle for ife saving medication.pic.twitter.com/a3Zao82W7c
