Yesterday I tweeted about remarks I made to a group of doctors regarding opioids and stigma, and I unfortunately and regrettably upset some in the diabetes community. I apologize.

Because my remarks were to a medical crowd, I assumed people would understand my example referred to hyperglycemia specifically caused or exacerbated by diet. However many people develop diabetes and/or exacerbations unrelated to diet.

Evergreening (preventing a generic alternative) price matching & gouging (got tuna co.s in trouble) has made insulin (oxygen for diabetics) unaffordable. So people are forced to ration insulin & die from hyperglycemia and are then labeled “noncompliant” (in the USA)#Insulin4all

You assume people in the medical field actually know the difference between Type 1 and Type 2..... when in reality they don’t.

No, you were piling on and perpetuating a stigma. As a T1 I'm offended at the attempt to say that only T2s deserve their disease. You've set the conversation back 20 years and you should know better. Eating sugar or fast food does not cause either type of diabetes. Period.

I am in the medical crowd. The medical community knew what you meant and doesn't appreciate remarks that add to stigmatization. This is no excuse.

But its ok to stigmatize pain patients,? We didnt ask for a disease and we cant just stop the pain without help from meds, that now the gov is denying to everyone

There are more carbs in an apple than in McDonald’s chicken nuggets. Extremely arrogant to assume that diabetics would be fine if they ate no fast food! Wrong insulin is still required to live! #victimblamming #insulinforall #T1D

I am medical. My daughter is Type 1. Medical professionals DO NOT understand OR recognize the difference btw T1 and T2. Thank you for addressing your original tweet. That was incredibly ignorant on all levels. Even the CPR comment was incredibly out of line.

People are refused insulin every day though. The cost of insulin in America is a significant issue that needs increased awareness.
