San Pedro's Korean Friendship Bell rang 39 times today- once for each year Dr. Martin Luther King lived. Dr. King's life was cut tragically short fifty years ago to the day but his powerful call for equality and justice lives on in all of us.

We’ve got the experts on our side! Chief Osby and Medical Director Dr. Kazan are here with me in Sacramento advocating for . Their paramedics encounter patients every day who belong in Sobering Centers and Mental Health UCCs— NOT ERs.

When someone is having a mental health crisis, the ER is the last place they belong. Instead, paramedics should be able to take patients to mental health urgent care centers for the tailored, specialty care they need.

Under current state law, paramedics can’t take patients to sobering centers or mental health urgent care centers. Instead, they take them to overcrowded ERs. This system makes no sense and there is a solution.

In 1961, my dad- Kenny Hahn- was the only elected official in LA to greet MLK Jr. He was deeply moved by the time they spent together and like so many, I grew up on stories of MLK's courage & vision for America. May he rest in peace.
