There is no question that he would have faced certain death. There was smoke and chaos and the killer was young, determined, took NRA-sponsored gun training at school and was well armed and alert. Peterson would have been outgunned. But most officers would have made an effort.

That’s pure BS. The murderer wasn’t some special forces marksman. Peterson has years of Police training & ANY other “good guy w/a gun” would have gone in.

If he feels that he didn’t have to protect and serve, then why is he in law enforcement???
-
Their argument now is that nothing in their charters says anything about either protecting or serving the public. Which is hilarious because that's exactly what they're supposed to do. Police now claim to just be law enforcement, nothing more.

For those quoting the SCOTUS ruling, this may be different. If not, wtf is the point of LE and security guards if they don't have to do any protecting?
-
That SCOTUS ruling applies to the public in general, it doesn't apply to specific circumstances like a public facility with armed police presence that is supposedly there to protect the facility. It is the specific expectation of protection that the SCOTUS ruling allowed for.

During the shootings, gunman Nikolas Cruz reloaded five times, which meant there were opportunities to stop him if Peterson had done his job. Eleven minutes passed from the time of the first shots to the time the first police officer entered the building.
