    A couple of photos of the plates from last Friday. I just love the stereom microstructure.

    An ophiuroid vertebra (the core of the arm).  This element is two fused plates.  You can see the suture along the midline.
    An ophiuroid spine.  All echinoderm plates are single crystals of Mg-Calcite regardless of the microstructure.

    , or Brittle Stars, are an interesting group of that have a poor fossil record. As fossils, they are often studied from isolated arm plates found in washed sediment. Here is a before and after photo of one such beast.

    Whole specimen, view about 2 cm across.

    We had a colony of move across our yard yesterday. They crossed as a group, went into a hole, and came out with pupae that they placed into a different hole 30 m away. Very cool!

    In honor of the 16th International Echinoderm conference at the end of the month in Nagoya Japan, I present Kailidiscus chinensis, Middle , China, for . This awesome fossil has many features more akin to eocrinoids than later edrioasteroids.

    Dogs have four kinds of teeth, incisors, canines, premolars, and molars. These are the same kinds of teeth that humans have! We love using human comparisons for because everybody understands how their teeth work!

    Checked on our this morning and saw this little hiding in the rock. We're able to tell them all apart based on coloring and size, but this one we can pick out because of how pretty it's butt is!

    w/ *Uintatherium* an plant eating () mammal that lived during the (~45-37 million years ago). *Uintatherium* translates to "Beast of the Uinta ".

    Large replica skeleton of Uintatherium an extinct plant eating animal. The skull is weirdly shaped and the total size is a bit larger than a rhino, being almost 2 tons full grown.
    Close up of the skull that has concave elements. Saber-toothed canines similar to large cats but rest of the teeth are like rhinos!
    Reconstruction of this extinct beast, looks like a rhinoceros-hippo hybrid!
