I saw him speak in 1986 and during Q&A session afterwards, he said his single favorite word in any language was "moon", because of the fitness of the sound to the thing.

This is extremely common nowadays, because while Borges was educated in his father's library full of English books, young autodidacts are educated on the Internet.

A French friend of mine loves English for the same reason (the flexibility of having two root languages). But he says it makes English speakers seem equivocal to foreign speakers. He wonders if the ‘perfidious’ tag comes from this fact.

As a linguist, fascinated by Borges take on English... of the Latin based languages I have found French to be almost absurdly nuanced. Countless times I understand the individual words but not the precise meaning only to have French friends argue about the translation!
