I saw him speak in 1986 and during Q&A session afterwards, he said his single favorite word in any language was "moon", because of the fitness of the sound to the thing.
Little wonder that he used it in this audacious moment of speculative linguistics from Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius:pic.twitter.com/yfFkVHccjP
This is extremely common nowadays, because while Borges was educated in his father's library full of English books, young autodidacts are educated on the Internet.
A French friend of mine loves English for the same reason (the flexibility of having two root languages). But he says it makes English speakers seem equivocal to foreign speakers. He wonders if the ‘perfidious’ tag comes from this fact.
You know, Spanish was Buckley’s first language.
There’s occasional moments where I think Buckley was half Mexican and then I remember that’s James Jesus Angleton
As a linguist, fascinated by Borges take on English... of the Latin based languages I have found French to be almost absurdly nuanced. Countless times I understand the individual words but not the precise meaning only to have French friends argue about the translation!
He elaborates a bit on this point in "The Enigma of Shakespeare"
@SullivanReilly @Balsamkanada I think we were talking the other day about this same point on the Latin and Germanic roots of English.
What a wonderful man.
Three times the vocabulary (but the teacher's unions in Mexico lie and tell the kids Spanish has the largest vocabulary
).
@LuchitoLeone @Malena_Acco @NAccomazzo que me cuentan? Habrá que ver la entrevista completa?
Contame por qué la redacción de la nota está hecha en el block de notas...
Necesito ver o leer la entrevista completa, no me convence pero sí me sorprende que lo diga. Borges siempre abriendo el debate innesperado.
A mí no me convence su argumento y se me ocurren contra-ejemplos. Y sí, también me sorprendió.
