Hi @GoodwinMJ, I think it’s perfectly valid to explain your own academic interests and perspectives with reference to your own upbringing. But why did you add this about the rest of us, which you know isn’t remotely true? Not even a tiny bit true. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-8850915/PROFESSOR-MATTHEW-GOODWIN-White-working-class-boys-deprived-Britain.html …pic.twitter.com/OktAxbwDbQ

Because it fits a narrative. (State comprehensive, pot washer, TEFL teacher, beneficiary of ESRC 1+3 grant, knower of Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough and several of the less salubrious corners of Warsaw.)

All those privately educated individuals from elite backgrounds who have ended up as lefty-luvvies ranting about white privilege must be a terrible disappointment to their parents.

I would pen a reply but I’m too busy with the unconscious bias monitoring form my university apparently makes me fill in every week

Well said - i’m an academic who has grown up in Rotherham and indeed still lives here! Shock not all academics live in ivory towers. These sweeping generalisations aren’t helpful.

It worse than that. It literally describes NOBODY I know in academia. By contrast, I know a lot who were first generation university graduates and who are from lower middle class backgrounds. Almost every academic I know was state educated. I can count the exceptions on one hand.

Maybe the Unis in my career are not elite enough, but I am having trouble thinking of any colleague (or even any academic I’ve ever met) fitting this criteria. I did love working in Pizza Hut though when I was young.

Exactly. It literally describes nobody I have ever known in academia. And I’ve been working in this profession for 27 years.

I’m blocked by Goodwin because I’ve long thought he’s ridiculous with a one trick pony narrative that is now completely outdated and told him so whenever he crossed my timeline

Is it "valid" when such disingenuous claims are made in the Daily Mail, with a clear ideological aim? Surely we should be past giving the benefit of the doubt and be clear that this is no honest mistake.

If he wants to tell his life story to the readers of the Mail on Sunday, then I think that’s his choice. I wouldn’t do it personally. What really concerns me is that he is falsely claiming it to be unique and exceptional, by painting a picture of the rest of us that’s just a lie.
