EU trade commissioner Dombrovskis told AFP that all Commission efforts on “political outreach” over the deal have been suspended. In other words, he’s not saying the technical preparation for the deal has been suspended. In other words, it’s pretty much empty political talk.

For now the Commission is trying to find the fine balance between keeping the deal alive and not pissing off angry lawmakers. Given Dombrovskis’ remarks today, if he one day says it’s time to start ratifying the deal- circumstances unchanged- it will amount to a political U-turn.

It’s useful to add that some quarters of the Parliament are already showing signs of readiness to get the deal ratified a few months down the road, hoping that their colleagues will see the value of the deal notwithstanding the inconvenient countersanctions. Hold your breath...

Well, when it comes to economic treaty ratification: Step 1 is laborious but trivial, while Step 2 is the essence of ratification. If work has stopped on preparing for 2, the deal's going nowhere.
