Plenty of this going on at many of our top academic institutions-it’s been (and still is) hiding in plain sight for years. Top brass, and researchers, either know, or suspect, but turn a blind eye so as to avoid repercussions such as loss of funding, scandal of integrity, etc...

Having just finished an
@NIH "Rigor and Reproducibility" section, this is so infuriating. The most important component of rigor is working together as a team to critically evaluate the data.

It's not surprising that good professors who like to allow their students to take real ownership of projects would not micromanage their PhDs. Yet any fraud *should* become evident to the professor through thorough review of the students' projects.
