I'm writing a book on fraud/bias/error/hype in science. There are ENDLESS things to discuss, but do you have a story that nobody knows yet? Or a tip on a dodgy/overhyped study, from any field? Tweet me, or send to [mytwittername]1@gmail.com! Thanks, pals!

So, this study in the BMJ saying that standing desks make you healthier, more engaged, etc. Look at the supplementary tables: they did dozens and dozens of tests, but explicitly write "adjustment for multiple comparisons was not performed"! 😳😳😳

I don't think I've ever seen a study that assumes correlation = causation, and totally forgets about genetics, in such a careless way. Really astonishing! (paper here: ) via

Let’s all agree that from now on, every genetics paper has to include a gene bat.

No matter how many times you read the first paragraph of the Wikipedia page of the former Chair of my Dept., it never gets any less remarkable.

Looks like a cool dataset, but I've got whiplash from the shifting back-and-forth between correlational and causal language (even just in the Abstract!). It's fully correlational, of course.

If the hoaxers thought in terms of evidence and science, instead of just fetishising the idea of those things, they'd have done this:

This chap () has now written a blog post claiming I called him a "relativist". You've got to laugh, really: you criticise someone for making factual errors (still uncorrected BTW), and they respond by making further false claims!

The "Sokal Squared" hoax suffers from the exact flaws it claims to expose: political bias and a lack of rigor.

3 true things: 1)There’s a vast amount of nonsense in gender studies journals, with (AFAIK) no reform movement; 2) There’s a vast amount of nonsense in science journals (though we’re working on fixing that); 3) This hoax was pretty inept & didn’t show anything new or interesting.
