If you thought colour photography began with the patent of the autochrome in 1907, think again! These astounding colour photographs of San Francisco's earthquake in 1906 were taken by inventor Frederick Ives 114 years ago, but look like they could have been taken in the 1970s!pic.twitter.com/U4qFltDLL2

Indeed, it is amazing how immediate and accessible the colour makes the images.

Amazing. And they were 3-D, too! https://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/the-1906-san-francisco-quake-in-color-1668776/ …pic.twitter.com/ohfgpzXUOw

I was about to ask if they were 3D, they have that look.

Strangely, aside of the event itself, of course, I'm amazed by the tall size and modernity of the buildings at that time, already.

just a détail. 1907 is the year of the commercialization of the Autochrom not the patent. The patent was deposited on December 17, 1903 by the brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière. and before, 50 years of adventures with pioneers like Thomas Sutton, Louis Ducos du Hauron etc.

I know it sounds stupid but what gets me everytime is how these photographs remind me that the past didn’t happen in black and white.
