I don't usually post imagery of high pressure systems because they're typically less visual 👀 than storms... but this über #ridge aloft has been the product of an epic case of "anticyclonic Rossby wave breaking" 🤓 and is responsible for the historic heat 🌡️

Extraordinary #sunset w/jaw-dropping #mammatus Tue eve as severe storm approached #Albuquerque. Pano stitch accentuated the curves a bit, but the clouds really did look like that – in fact hard to do justice to what it was like to see this from N to S & horizon to overhead! #nmwx

The sun sets on boiling convection in the roiling core of #Laura, on this eve of destruction. It's going to be a long night and days ahead, and long recovery. Thinking of those in the path of this extremely dangerous #hurricane.

Why I've been obsessed with #weather since I was an infant, this cloud yesterday being example # 827,091,011,091,461,719,750,814,199,411,719,978,181,917,121,819,203,091,946,316,194,850,114,530,747,393,493,264,759,067,043,431,090,873,645,178,398,630,807,256,362,848,475,912,171,958

#Cutoff can be an overused/misused term, as there are many closed lows which aren't truly cut off from the jet stream -- but this one is textbook!

The sun rises on the core of the strongest northwest #Bahamas #hurricane in modern records as it inexorably spins toward the islands with its mesmerizing eye mesovortices, and now the catastrophic eyewall is onshore😰 #Dorian

Was looking at storms to the east with the drone and oblivious to what was going on to the west -- then just happened to look around and oooh glad I did at the right time as the #sunset was amazing! #gawx

The long, captivating, catastrophic life of #Hurricane #Laura -- from tropical wave over eastern Africa on Aug 11 through Category 4 landfall to merger w/a nontropical system & exiting the US on 8/30. [Change in appearance partway thru the 352 frames is a switch of satellites.]

#Dorian's core has been pesky and resilient ever since it formed two weeks ago, and now north of 35° latitude it has become more solid yet again

We're used to seeing this type of spectacular imagery of mesovortices (typical of very intense tropical cyclones) spinning in the eye of W Pacific super typhoons; in the Atlantic and at this latitude not so much — a visual testament to how exceptional the threat from #Florence is

What a wild & complex weather extremity—a 929 millibar beast followed by another meteorological bomb as the pressure of #StormDennis dropped to 920 (one of the lowest on record in this part of the world), & then the 2 combined into a massive cyclone while doing a #Fujiwhara dance

Incredible to see this -- while such eyewall structure & mesovortices in the 👁️ are common in very intense typhoons & hurricanes in the Pacific and sometimes elsewhere in the Atlantic basin, that's not the case in the NW Gulf & making a beeline for the coast #Laura #StaySafe
