Have you ever before seen a gun-brandishing terrorist walk towards the police, his back turned to them, not at all worried that they would tackle/shoot him? I can think of only a couple of explanations for that, and neither of them reflect well on the Delhi police and the state.

India's industrialists laugh at the police using humiliation as a tool of policing because they know such abuses of authority will never affect them. The school analogy is also instructive - the masses as errant schoolkids, with themselves as the benevolent principals, of course.

“Face mask rule violators at Marine Drive in Mumbai being made to do a “Murga” walk as punishment by Mumbai Police” Received on my ‘SignalWonderbox.’ A common punishment in the boarding school I attended. Comical, but physically taxing.I certainly won’t forget my mask!!

What fresh diaspora bullshit is this? Will white editors stop giving space to soft-Sanghi fash apologists just because they're brown-skinned? How about talk to someone actually in India before publishing this ridiculous victim-blaming nonsense?

Arun Ferreira's first arrest was under a Congress government. Kabir Kala Manch were branded Naxals and thrown into jail under a Congress government. Your party passed the laws and set the precedents that have paved the way for such gross misuse of state power.

There is only place for one NGO in India and it's called the RSS. Shut down all other NGOs. Jail all activists and shoot those that complain. Welcome to the new India. #BhimaKoregaon

The US media had photos of corpses piled up in refrigerated trucks. A quick Google search would have shown you the images. But don't let the facts get in the way of your propaganda.

Burning or burial of the dead is a sacred, profoundly private act. US media never disrespected their dead from 9/11 to Covid. Nor did media of France, Germany, Italy, UK, China or any self-respecting nation. It’s your prerogative, but just asking: Was this necessary? twitter.com/BDUTT/status/1…

3 takeaways from the Nidhi case: 1. It's sad, but it's also bloody hilarious. 2. Too much about that story doesn't add up, as many of her online 'defenders' are happy to point out in private. 3. Blue tick liberals prove once again that diff standards apply to their friends.

Stan Swamy passed away while imprisoned in a case where key evidence was planted, a case that has less to do with any crime than with the State's inability to tolerate dissent. The State has its blood on its hands, and that includes an apathetic judiciary.

Every morning I wake up and am shocked anew at the fact that our country is enacting Nuremberg-style laws, arresting young Muslim men for the crime of falling in love, destroying families-to-be in aid of bigotry. And most of us just act like it isn't happening.

If the Munawar Faruqui case doesn't convince the Indian comedy industry to work towards a more pro-active and organised response to censorship-by-mob, I don't know what will. 2020 saw an unprecedented shrinking of the space afforded to Indian comics, with little fightback.

Mumbai Mirror shutting down is terrible news for journalism in the city. Despite being a Times Group publication, it had fantastic local coverage and reach, and did some great national stories too. It's also been one of the braver mainstream publications in recent years.

As rich Indians, you mean. Sometimes I wonder if these startup CEO types understand that there's more to the country than their target audience/peer group.

We as Indians will have 2 choices after this storm is over. Give up hope and leave this nation after all the pain and suffering we went through. Convert all of this pain and suffering as potential energy to fix this nation forever. One choice is easy, other is worthy.

As inspiring as these protests are, it's imp. to remember that this government has 4.5 more years in power. They can pull a tactical retreat, confident that they can wait out the protests. The opposition needs to figure out how to turn this discontent into wins at the state level

Lmao just saw some big shot editor compare the farmers protest to the Capitol Hill insurrection. This is the level of analysis in Indian media. I just wanna ask, with your tongue so firmly stuck up a certain arse, what sort of tongue cleaner do you use to get the taste out?

Not to be a bummer but we must be this outraged when the state unleashes terror on citizens anywhere in the country, not just when it happens in Delhi. This anger that you're now feeling? It is a part of life for so many for years. In Kashmir, in Assam, in central India.

Indian liberals cling so desperately to the idea of civility in a public discourse decisively hijacked by the most divisive, genocidal forces. It reflects a yearning to return to a status quo that was neither just nor civil in reality, and that has gone forever anyway.

Modi and Shah sacrificed tend of thousands to COVID-19 to win an election they ended up losing. I hope at least someone in the Indian state has the courage to ask them if it was worth it. Although like most Indians over the last few years, my hopes are likely to go unfulfilled.

First of all, this ridiculous rush to defend rats jumping off the Republic ship is an insult to all the journalists who choose integrity over a paycheck, who hustle and grind to pay the bills instead of being willing participants in hate propaganda and lynch mobs.

If you're ever worried about calling things wrong or sounding like an idiot in your music crit, just remember that the Guardian once carried a piece that said that Naezy was born in the Khatarnak suburb of Mumbai. And four years later, that piece is still up sans correction.

So many indie musicians are completely silent on the protests and the brutality with which the BJP is trying to clamp down on them. Disappointed, but not surprised. "independent" hoke kya ukhaad liya tumne? Even Bollywood actors have more balls than you, kaise indie artists ho?
