    More terrible news from . Haze Fan is an experienced Chinese journalist. Apart from Bloomberg she's worked for Reuters, CNBC, CBS and Al Jazeera. Now she's been taken away to be held in secret because of some "national security" breach.

    This is an error. Brexit isn’t an event. It’s a change in Europe that has implications for everyone. Get it right and we have a changed friendship, but get this wrong and it could eat away at us, and that will harm us all. This is a stratification shift, not a trade talk.

    It's really not well grasped in London how little time the rest of the EU has for its amateur dramatics. Far more important than Brexit in Paris, Brussels, Berlin, Rome etc are topics like the eurozone, Schengen, data, migration, defence, China-EU relations, carbon targets...

    The trade talks are the most unusual of negotiations because they are negotiating divergence not convergence... but in the end, all Brussels deals are about pragmatism & fudge. Here’s a neat one from a longtime EU watcher 👇

    If there are grown-ups in Brussels today, agreement on a rational system of joint governance of the FTA is within reach, allowing for mutual remedies and proportionate retaliation in proven bad cases of unfair competition. 1/
