    When it is not possible or practical to use non-invasive methods, catheter samples or suprapubic aspiration (SPA) should be used. SPA should only be used if ultrasound guidance can show the presence of urine in the bladder.

    Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are infections that can affect different parts of the urinary tract including the bladder, urethra and the kidney. Most cases can be treated with antibiotics.

    The most common symptom of UTIs in infants and children older than three months who are pre-verbal is fever. Common symptoms in infants children older than three months who are verbal include more frequent urination and dysuria.

    Dipstick testing should be used for infants and children over 3 months but less than 3 years with a suspected UTI. If leukocyte esterase or nitrite, are positive, antibiotic treatment should be started and a urine sample sent for culture.
