NPC meme works because to the left virtue is indistinguishable from individuality and intelligence. They can't imagine that they aren't smart and free-thinking because they have convinced themselves that their beliefs are evidence of their intelligence and intellectual freedom.

The idea that intelligence and individuality are unalloyed goods is one of the central progressive ideas. They like to imagine, that through their mental fortitude, that they have won their ideas as Prometheus won fire from the Gods.

The idea is that progressive beliefs exist as platonic forms, and we only have to discover them. The idea that someone would have progressive beliefs because it is safe, convenient, pleasurable or profitable (or some combination thereof) is anathema to them.

Youre a boomer. If you knew what an npc was like every person under 40 you wouldnt have had to look it up in the first place. If youve ever played a video game the meme makes perfect sense whether youre a gamer or not.

I think they actually fear the thought of being wrong. As in, to simply ask the question "am i the bad guy" terrifies them to a point that they don't ask it. The NPC meme makes them question their beliefs, and this is uncomfortable. They're right, we're evil. No questions asked
