Science isn't decided by juries, except in the U.S legal system. This is sad but ridiculous: awarding $289M to one person when (a) science says Roundup doesn't cause cancer and (b) 1000s of other plaintiffs are suing, so what about them? https://www.cnn.com/2018/08/10/health/monsanto-johnson-trial-verdict/index.html …

And did it ever occur to you that one or more scientists was on the jury?

Remember vioxx? Lifet me obese diabetic with prior heart attack gets multi million dollar award after taking it a week. Jury system is all about jury selection and emotions of lay people.

usa is perhaps the only country where science has minimum penetrance in governance and legal system, yet the country has one of the highest no of innovators, inventors and smart folks.

Juries have not needed to decide the difference between science and pseudoscientific nonsense since publication of https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/0926655064901665 … Dependence of RNA synthesis... on glycolysis, oxidative carbohydrate catabolism and a type of “oxidative phosphorylation”

The issue is not that the legal system needs to resolve scientific issues from time to time, the problem is that our legal system is so bad at it. Lawsuits are a consequence of important disagreement, and science has important consequences. Disagreements are inevitable

The evidence presented to the Jury is what allowed them to decide. The evidence was science. They didn't point fingers for 16 days. Every paper was cross examined by experts.

Science isn't decided, period. Both sides presented the best available research and Monsanto lost. Deal with it.

This seems not quite right: "You can't take a lung cancer tumor and run a test that proves that tobacco caused that cancer. ... ", you can get a pretty good sense of etiology from mutational signature and driver variants

In the last year, courts have ruled that 1) Round-up causes cancer 2) Talc causes cancer 3) Wi-Fi causes cancer 4) Vaccines cause SIDs All of which are completely bloody wrong, clashing entirely with scientific data. The law is an ass - especially when it comes to science.
