Near the hospital's oncology department I saw the sign: 'Gamma Knife'. The medical profession's talent for obfuscatory euphemism must have faltered: gamma knife sounds like a weapon on a Romulan battle cruiser.

Dear . I have several exes in a workspace depending on a shared crate which is also in the same workspace (.rlib appears where I expect). But when I rebuild the exes Cargo rebuilds the rlib each time. No feature shenanigans involved. Puzzled

I am so over this heat. I'm over these fires. I am sick of monitoring fire apps and radars and news feeds for potential emergency updates. I am tired of the smoke, and the anxiety, and the fear.

Weird crate names: who could guess that 'out' provides a very efficient way to extract n largest numbers from a slice of m elements, where n is small compared to m?

A tribute to medical workers in Wuhan who are working 24/7 to take care of huge inflow of infected people. This is not to forget that it’s time for new year which is the biggest annual holiday in China. These people r real heroes.

This is a great blog post, and inspired me to put in writing some of my rambling from last year's FOSDEM talk: "Dynamic type systems aren't even simpler" — because there's never enough advocacy for static types!

It's pretty simple really. The problem with YAML (nice as it is for what it does) is that it has no concept of scale. There are no "subroutines", not even a GOTO or a pointer reference. Stuck at one scale, it fails quickly to adapt as systems grow.

someone I work with uses "circus factor" instead of "bus factor", as in how many people would need to run away to join the circus for a project to fall apart, and it's super cute and I'm gonna steal it

Transcendence (2014) is a good-looking movie that starts strong but degenerates into something simplistic with unnecessary explosions. Science-flavoured fantasy, like the old vision of The Singularity itself as Nerd Rapture.

Apparently a non-trivial number of systems are experiencing bugs. A common Y2K "fix" just postponed things by 20 years, interpreting 00-19 as the 2000s and 20-99 as the 1900s. 20 years is now up, some of those systems are still in use, and they think it's 1920. Oooops.
