Here's why centrists tend to be the most anti-democratic. Most centrists are _not_ extremely thoughtful people who understand all the arguments of left and right equally well. Instead, centrists tend to find politics boring and wish it would just go away.https://twitter.com/CarlWRitter/status/999529227178467328 …

Today’s must-read: New research finds that the threat to democracy is coming from the center. Centrists are more skeptical of democracy, less likely to support free and fair elections than extremists to the right and left. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/05/23/opinion/international-world/centrists-democracy.html … pic.twitter.com/sZNXNMn5EP

Unfortunately only a small number of extremely thoughtful people who understand all the arguments of left and right _and_ wish politics would just go away.

This squares with research I read a while back that said that most swing voters pay nearly no attention to politics at all.

anecdotally-- my dad's a smart dude but he's a swing voting quasi-libertarian who just wishes his taxes were lower and doesn't even know who bashar al-assad is

Let me go out on a limb and suggest that centrists should be eliminated. Maybe some sort of ritualistic comat to the death as a right of passage into adulthood might focus peoples' views. Call it the Sparta approach to civil society.

Why not do this for everyone? Then we can actually have a real Spartan society and get rid of democracy too. Kill 2 birds with one stone.

It changes from country to country, though. In countries in which a non-democratic far-right was in power in recent history (Germany, Austria, Spain), the far-right tend to be more anti-democratic than, say, the Anglo world.

Steve is right. Politics is nasty biz filled w/ unsavory ppl, but because it's so consequential, it must be that one who doesn't have strong opinions is not a thoughtful person.

so, they're normies that exist mostly to be contrarians of both sides, but at the end of the day they will end up allinging with, most of the times to the left.
