Lockheed used to have ( don't know if still running ) a large mfg-facility in the Bay Area ( Mountain View,Calif ) ~ close proximity to Moffett Field

Lockheed was the biggest employer in 1980s Silicon Valley, with 28,000 workers building Trident nuclear sub ICBMs. The Cold War was funded on a vast scale. Much of today's SV infrastructure of technical expertise was built up & paid for by taxpayers during Cold War.

A succinct summary of the ideological/influence process at work.
-
There's a fringe theory in economics that moving the capital to a remote / smaller city actually helps to break this process down a bit and beat back some of the waste in the system. Can't remember where I heard about that.
-
I've read the same. But hard to break away from the feeding trough to catch a breath of air, lest someone takes your place.
-
IIRC some research has been done showing that states with their capital in a small city rather than the largest city in the state have lower taxes, smaller size % of GDP, and fewer regulations (which is a proxy for favouritism to special interests)
-
So you're saying that New York and California wouldn't be the low tax business friendly havens they are today if their capitals were NYC and SF/LA respectively?
-
No, I’m saying that the theory exists that they would be *even worse* if the capitals were to be integrated with their largest city, and that the USA would be *even worse* if the Capital were to be in NYC too. Think London and Paris. (It’s not my theory, I am relating it)
-
Interesting - I can see it shifting the dead weight loss around but not reducing it one way or the other The rest of the state politicos get money - NYC gets cultural domination - i.e., NYers get another opportunity to get individual status by dominating non NY-ers
-
The theory is that dividing senior leadership attention between the capital and the economic centres results in less 'capture' of the government, I think.

When Grumman was making the f-16 in the 80s in Long Island - they didnt need to lobby much bc all the parts were made in the USA - mostly around nyc.
-
You mean F-14 (the F-16 was General Dynamics made in Fort Worth) but I assure you Grumman did plenty of lobbying. All defense contractors did, that's how the game was (and is) played.
-
You are correct. I have to dig up my dad's old research reports - He covered both companies from the 60s to 80s/

Isn't Burbank where Jay Leno used to do his ripoff of Howard Stern's man-in-the-street interviews to show how ignorant average people were?
