I don't know, I think Snorri Sturluson may have been trying to prove that his ancestors, like the Romans, were descendants of the Trojans. It was a common medieval trope. Then again, it may have been a refinement of an old folk belief. (I think some Anatolians reached Italy...)

Herodotus claimed the Etruscans were Anatolians. Some recent research suggests he may have been correct. The Romans may have had that story and then refined it once the Greek literati dominated the Mediterranean, making the Anatolians into the Trojans of Greek myth.

It's really too bad that Hitler's misuse of the word "Aryan" set back research into the development and divergence of Indo-European peoples for decades

I've always assumed the Ramayana evolved out of propaganda for an Aryan invasion of Ceylon. (Hanuman's monkey army were presumably local fifth-columnists, judging from the close physical resemblance)

Indian accounts are defined by the word ‘itihaas.’ It is not history in the sense understood by the West, but as you say, “stylized versions.”
