South India had steel-making reknown. 'Wootz' steel was invented probably in Southern India ~550-450 BCE and was exported west, for example king Artaxerxes II of Persia had a wootz steel sword. The pre-Islamic Arab word for sword is 'muhannad' meaning from Hind (India).
