Many of Orange County's new homeless are whites from back east lured by SoCal's booming drug treatment industry plus the sunshine. But then their insurance runs out and they still like drugs, so they moved into the tent city along the Santa Ana River. http://www.unz.com/isteve/is-california-importing-junkies-from-the-midwest/ …https://twitter.com/kausmickey/status/980656514359746560 …

I don't think these homeless are immigrants. But if we had lower unskilled immigration it would be easier for people like these (the more employable ones) to find decent-paying work and avoid this lure/trap.

There are a ton of new homeless where I live too. Some are probably spillover from the evangelical heroin treatment centers in Central AZ, the rest came because my city lost a case to the ACLU about panhandling on 1st Amendment grounds.

And the weather *is* nice. In the summer. A couple freeze to death every winter. :(

What should be done with them? Fortunately for us, they don't camp out in western New Jersey towns so I have no direct experience. My instinct is to clear them out and keep rousting them out of the city because they are a danger to normal people.

When pension crisis hit several years back, remember reading public employee pensions would drain money from public services, leading to public "squalor." Don't know if this related to pensions, but we definitely have public squalor. If even tech workers are living in campers...?

That's why the homeless problem is a combination of permissiveness and poverty. People should not be allowed to camp out anywhere they want. If they want to sleep in a tent, go to a campground!

Other Western countries just don't seem to have this many lost people.

Philadelphia is the place where all drug addicts from Puerto Rico are dumped. The rehabs are run by shady Christian Evangelical types.http://www.philly.com/philly/news/special_packages/Puerto_Ricos_solution_to_heroin_crisis_one-way_tickets_to_Philly.html?mobi=true …

Florida is the Northeast California, once someone tells you they are living in Florida you know it's for rehab.

Is there any solid research on bang for your buck as regards "treatment?" How much money does it waste, exactly?

Shouldn't the homeless at least get free housing, though? I mean, isn't part of having a generous social safety net giving free housing--such as free apartments--to the poor and homeless?
