The parts of India that are doing best today, such as, in their ideologically different ways, capitalist Bangalore and leftist Kerala, tend to be more in the more Dravidian, less Aryan south. So maybe the Aryan Invasions were bad for modern Indians?https://twitter.com/chakranotdot/status/980650984501374976 …

plus dominance across traits isn't monotonic. The stereotypically intelligent are neither the stereotypically tall and fair nor the stereotypically martial. I don't think they would have done a very good job characterizing modern status and dominance in India

Or maybe the northern areas were later taken over by Muslims & that led to lots of bad practices/breeding?

Indian historical record keeping was atrocious. I read about Vijayanagara Empire (established in the 14th century); blown away by how few written records there were. Like reading a Bronze Age archaeology book. It's hard to discern the causes of things in India b/c of this.

There was a documentary series about 11 years ago, The Story of India ( https://m.imdb.com/title/tt1333053/?ref=m_nv_sr_1 … ). It was hard to make sense of it, despite the host’s knowledge and enthusiasm. Some great leader goes off to fast in a cave - weird dead ends like that.

While reading about Indian history, I eventually came to become more sympathetic to the Islamic perspective... Because they actually wrote down a perspective for me to feel sympathy towards!

seems too confounded by proximity to Mughal Delhi to tell?. The dravidian thing still feels rather enigmatic, e.g. Tamil Sangams or more broadly complex languages + substantial influence on the Vedic culture

Nor can I make much of arguments from pictures of affluent native women in convertibles from the 1950s without a mechanism for context. Can do the same for Kabul, and likely Paris, London, and Manhattan too.

(They all looked better than they do now. Seems to be true for most agglomerations that weren't literally nuked. As such sepia pictures of pretty Persian women in a fashionable headscarf not enough to vindicate Monsieur de Gobineau).

World of certain Aryan-Dravidians, Anglos, Jews, and Americans (European mutt edition) looks much better than Persians, Pathans, Punjabis, NE Asians, or Nords. 19th cent guys missed smth (importance of ethnicity was contemporaneously common wisdom, but they took it far).

I know you're only semi-serious here, but this might be because of larger colonial influence. Southern India is much less populated than northern India, on a trade route and is also 10-20% Christian compared to less than 1% in the north. All indicate larger colonial influence.

Similar to Africa, where more MENA admixture doesn't equal more prosperous but history with colonialism does(Botswana/Ghana vs Somalia/Ethiopia for example). Religion is probably from Portuguese traders/missionaries rather than colonists/rule, but could still have an affect.

Also, "The state has witnessed significant emigration, especially to Arab states of the Persian Gulf during the Gulf Boom of the 1970s and early 1980s, and its economy depends significantly on remittances from a large Malayali expatriate community." Most remittances of any state.

The other point re Gobineau et al. is their admiration of Iran. There's a truth to it we can all feel-compared to Saudi A about which literally nothing good may be said-but the place is poorer than Malaysia!

Steve what do you think India would be like if they didn't have socialism until the free market oriented reforms in the 1990s and they actually happened shortly after their independence?

Also, at this point in time, I don't think that we can make too many broad conclusions about India. After all, in 1913, one could have thought that the more industrialized U.S., U.K., and Germany are smarter than Russia and Japan, but modern IQ tests show otherwise.
