Pew Research Center: Our 2017 survey found that almost 70 million Nigerians plan to migrate to America or Europe in the next 5 years. http://www.unz.com/isteve/pew-70-million-nigerians-intend-to-migrate-over-next-five-years/ …pic.twitter.com/WKWX7DC81k

According to Pew, 74% of Nigeria's 186 million residents, or 137 million Nigerians (counting children), would like to migrate to another country, mostly to America or Europe. The biggest question of the 21st Century will be: Are borders racist? http://www.unz.com/isteve/pew-70-million-nigerians-intend-to-migrate-over-next-five-years/ …pic.twitter.com/9mGFuTxZCb

The UN's 2017 forecast is that Nigeria's population will more than quadruple to 800 million by 2100, more than expected population of all Europe. Will Europe and America become banlieues of Africa? Or will borders be defended despite being called racist? http://www.unz.com/isteve/pew-70-million-nigerians-intend-to-migrate-over-next-five-years/ …pic.twitter.com/8VQGSYMlG7

Then they should study to be engineers or doctors, and demonstrate objective measures for highly developed talent. Otherwise, too bad. The developed world has no obligation to open its borders to any random people that want to move here.

Did you read the OP post? 70 million people would definitely not meet the standard. There are only about 380,000 Nigerian immigrants in the U.S. total right now. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigerian_Americans#Demography_and_areas_of_concentrated_residence …

Those are people who want to come here, not people who are on their way here. The fact is that all 70 million of those individuals already have to meet high standards to obtain a visa, so im not sure what your comment added.

Yes, obviously. Pew presents their case quite sympathetically, in my experience. It is worth considering the requirements to do so. The standards are high _currently_. My point is that they need to be kept that way. The populist left is on a vote-buying spree right now.

Maybe. But its worth keeping in mind that many west africans are very, very conservative. So if it were the case that "populist leftists" wanted them here for vote buying purposes, it could easily backfire.

Makes sense at first glance. There must be some level of poverty which is so bad they're incapable of migrating. Getting slightly richer doesn't satisfy, as they're still very poor, but it does let them afford an overloaded raft ticket.

It says a lot about what these people think about the quality of life and the chances for improvement in their own country when so many of them want to migrate to the West rather than stay there and improve conditions at home.
