Harvard racial paleogeneticist David Reich in NYT: "How Genetics Is Changing Our Understanding of ‘Race’" http://www.unz.com/isteve/reich-in-nyt-how-genetics-is-changing-our-understanding-of-race/ … Here's my summary of Reich's essay:pic.twitter.com/4Mb5pVyxQp

"What do you want me to say?" 'science' vs "I promise to still kiss the ring" science vs "Fuck you, what's the truth?" science.

A more charitable reading is interpreting it as akin to Galileo's essay on heliocentrism. 1. I am goodthinker 2. Badthinker muddying water, so we need to cast light on the subject

        3. Wade and Watson are Salviati. They are positively credentialed (long-time editor, discover of DNA) 4. 'Bad' argument is displayed, but not from mouth of author, and it is not effectively refuted. Interested readers can now check out Troublesome inheritance.

Could be he's simply halfway, but most goodthinkers do not provide baddies arguments, or provide them with any positive affect through providing their qualifications. Much easier to just say 'their work has been debunked/discredited' and leave it at that

I think it would be hard to sustain your view that Reich is suggesting that things need to be done to shut up Jim Watson or anyone else. The essay is a plea for openmindedness in academic discourse. You've read it precisely backwards.

Yes, normally throughout history when someone points and yells "blasphemour" at someone else, that was a call for openmindedness in academic discourse.

C’mon Steve, snarkiness is no substitute for honest discussion. Reich is not accusing anyone of blasphemy—he’s trying to frame a disagreement as a rational debate—when you call it blasphemy you’re rejecting the terms of debate you’ve called for.

He's making true statements with implications that could easily get him in trouble, and masking them by interspersing poisonous squid ink. Might work.

Steve, your summary of Reich is a fine example of how the drive create a metanarrative of injured innocence supercedes a fair reading of an essay that, contrary to what you suggest, invites a spirit of open scientific inquiry, and not petty self-interest in seeking funding.

Did Watson even claim that the African-European IQ gap was genetic? Indeed, I seem to recall him saying this: "Our aid programs are based on our belief that Africans are as intelligent as we are, whereas the tests say 'Not really.'" Where exactly did Watson mention genetics?

There have always been people who attempt to scientifically justify their racism. The fact is the biggest affirmative action in our society benefits white males. Unqualified white males are given high level corporate jobs repeatedly.
